Welcome to Fort Hood!  If you've never been here before, you have a lot of information to absorb on your way into the area.  Fort Hood is located approximately half way between Waco and Austin in central Texas.  At the time of this writing, it's still the only 2-division post in the United States with 1st Cavalry Division and 4th Infantry Division residing within its limits.  It's also the home of III Corps and other logistical and sustainment units supporting both divisions and the U.S. Army at large.

Along its southern border, there are 5 large communities in close proximity to Fort Hood: Killeen, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove, Temple, and Belton.  Each community is different in its own respect, with Copperas Cove, Killeen, and Harker Heights being where most military service members choose to reside due to convenience.  Temple and Belton are also great community choices, and they're nearby, so you should have a plentiful supply of housing at any given time.  Of course, troop rotations and deployments significantly affect the local supply and availability.

Although the Fort Hood area is large, many residents sometimes feel the need to venture a little further south to the Austin and San Antonio Areas.  Austin is a little over an hour away at 78 miles and San Antonio is approximately 2 hours or 156 miles from the Fort Hood area.  If you feel the need to be even more adventurous, you might also try day trips to Laredo (312 miles) and Mexico, Corpus Christi (294 miles away) for fishing and seaside activities, or maybe even schedule a trip to South Padre Island, near the southern tip of Texas and the Mexican border.  For a better view of other locations here in Texas, please click on the map graphic on the right.

For those who like to enjoy the outdoors, you're in luck!  Fort Hood has two convenient public lakes less than 20 minutes away - Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake.  Military service members may enjoy an outing with the family to the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA), or simply a day out fishing or skiing on the lake.  Stillhouse Hollow Lake is just a few minutes away, south of Killeen and Harker Heights.
